snapped off with a loud crack. He pushed himself to his feet and rounded on Vahe. Dylan snarled and spittle flew from his mouth. They circled each other. Dylan carefully tested Vahe's guard now, no longer letting his rage control his actions.

"Wow, V, you're moving faster. Did you drink some of her precious golden blood?"

Vahe

I wasn't entirely shocked to find out she was a Gift. I glanced back at Nat and then quickly back to Dylan.

I nodded. "That's why her blood tastes so good. I wasn't sure if she was a Gift or not. She exhibits none of the other symptoms."

I peeked at Nat again. She traced the veins on her wrist and looked puzzled.

"My blood is red like everyone else's."

Dylan laughed. "She doesn't know about the Gifted?"

"She just doesn't know that term for them." I grimaced.

"Golden blood is a derogatory term. I try not to be that rude to her."

I tackled him, ramming my shoulder into his gut. All the air rushed out of him in a grunt and we both hit the pavement. I drew my fist back and started pummeling his 61

face into the ground. Blood splattered, and my knuckles ached, but I didn't stop.

He turned his face and my fist smashed into the concrete shooting a sharp pain up my arm. I tried to control the pain, but my few seconds of hesitation gave Dylan the advantage he needed.

His fist came flying at my face and I didn't have time to dodge. My back hit the pavement. Dylan straddled my waist and pounded a fist into my gut.

He shrieked. "You little whore!" He stood up and turned.

My dagger was buried in his back and Natalya was backing up, but not fast enough. Dylan backhanded her hard across the face and she flew through the air. When she landed, she skidded across the ground.

After hauling myself up, I seized my dagger from his back.

He roared in pain and spun around. I slashed at his throat, but he dodged.

He touched his throat where a thin line of blood was welling. "You son of a bitch. You almost sliced my throat open."

"We're fighting, dumb shit, and don't be such a fucking baby. You dodged most of it." I sneered.

Slashing again, I caught him across the chest. He hissed and jumped back. "You're getting slow, Dylan," I said with a little smile.

He glowered at me. "We'll finish this later, fucker. I will kill you." He pivoted and then disappeared.

I sagged and collapsed onto the ground and started crawling to Nat. I catalogued my injuries: shattered every 62

bone in my hand and probably had internal bleeding. I took a breath and felt a twinge in my chest. Oh yes, and a fight wouldn't be complete without a few broken ribs.

I reached Nat and checked her pulse and respiration. She was alive. I probed the back of her neck with my fingers. She moaned lightly.
